The history of San Luca Palace
The building, which dates back to 1540, is located on the site where, according to archaeological research, the palace of the margrave once stood when Lucca was the capital of the marquis of Tuscany.
In later times the San Luca Hospital, which had been founded in 1262, was located here. At that time there were 11 of these so-called hospitals in the city, where merchants and travelers were accommodated. In the immediate vicinity of the accommodation there were workshops of craftsmen such as barbers, blacksmiths, bakers and tailors. A church was also attached to the building; it was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century.
Thanks to careful restoration and the establishment of the San Luca Palace, the palace is now back to its original purpose, the reception of guests.
